New Hose, Switch will Not Work

Two weeks ago I ordered 9 outlets and the Deluxe Low Voltage Hose Kit to replace those same pieces on my 19-year old Air Flo unit. The old outlets had normally open switches on them that closed and turned the system on when the cover was opened. I replaced all of the outlets and the only way that I can get the unit to turn on is if I insert the hose with the tab at 90 degrees to the normal position so that one of the metal strips on the hose end is in contact with both contact points in the outlet. I am unable to obtain any functioning of the on/off switch on the handle. I have checked the continuity of the hose and it is fine. Is there something about the old system that is incompatible with the new hose system?

Answer:

The gauge of wire used on the initial installation is usually the culprit. It needs to be at least 20 gauge (that is the standard installation). If it looks like phone wire, it will not able to carry enough voltage through the additional wire in the hose. The bright side is that the low voltage hose is better than basic hoses and will work with your system with it rotated in the wall valve to engage the system. You can either keep the hose or return it. There is another option of adding a Low Voltage Booster near your vacuum unit but that will cost more than the Low Voltage Hose.

No Suction When Using Power Brush

I have a Beam Rugmaster Plus central vacuum. The suction works for hose alone; but suction will not work when handle switch is turned on to the right to operate the vacuum head. The brush rotates, however, will not pick anything up. There are no clogs in the power brush and no clogs in the wand. Thank you!

Answer:

This is a typical hose switch failure. If your hose handle is Gas-Pump or Pistol Grip style, with the letter P branded in the plastic molding of the wall end cuff of the hose, we offer the replacement Switch Assemblies (electrical components of your hose handle).

Nutone Inlet Adapter

purchased a never used electrolux 1590.Our home has nutone ports. Hose slightly larger than port. Can we purchase an adapter? Diane, goffstown

Answer:

If your hose has no switch on the handle, then you can use Our Adapter. If it has a switch, see if you can shave a little plastic from the hose end.

On/Off Switch Not Working on New Hose

Just purchased from MD, a 30' low voltage hose because the switch on the old one would not turn on/off. Having the same problem with the new hose. Have to use switch on the unit. It is an M&S Air-Vac. Suggestions? Thanks-Mary, Charleston

Answer:

Please clarify if your old hose's switch at one time was functional and stopped, which caused you to purchase a new hose. Also, please advise if there are two small metal contact points located either on top or bottom of the inside of the inlet valve. These would appear to be small metal dots or nubs, just inside the hole in the wall. If you do have these two contact points, please ensure when you insert the new hose, the tab is either in the 12 o'clock or 6 o'clock position. If the tab is in misalignment, it will render the on/off switch non-functional.

Power Cutting In and Out

AirVac VM458 - I have two complete hose/power head sets in the house - one for each level. One of the sets has started to go on and off (motor, suction, headlight) when you go back and forth while vacuuming. Any ideas as to cause? Set is about 3 years old.

Answer:

Several things can cause this. The best way to isolate the issue is to hold everything still, while on, and put stress on each joint or connection by pulling, pushing and twisting to see if the power becomes intermittent at any point. If it's at any point along the hose, we recommend replacing the entire hose. If it's at a connection, it could just need to have the Switch Assembly replaced.

Power Nozzle Cutting Out, Works When Bypassing Hose

Having issues w/ vac - Stealth model - when I connect and turn it on, cuts in and out - went thru your troubleshoot link (which is very good), connected the brush directly to the wall inlet - no issues, narrowed the issue to the hose. Where is the fuse in the handle, where can I get a replacement and how do you change it?

Answer:

The hose handle contains the switch assembly, if you notice the two pins from the power cord that plug into the hose handle are blackened, you will need to replace the Switch Assembly and then clean the blackened pins. If you believe it to be the fuse, that will be located in the wall end of the hose as a hidden molded in diode and the Replacement Options we offer are located on our website, but if it is bad it will not be cutting out, but not work.

Reset Vacuum Head

How do I reset power head after running over the corner of an area rug? Pam Albany

Answer:
If the belt is not broken then you should see a reset button on the vacuum head. Also, some vacuums reset when you switch the electricity to them off then back on.

Rugmaster BM1393 Intermitent Power And Hot

I have the Beam Rugmaster Bm1393. It has been cutting out while vacuuming back and forth. It almost completly quits and then will start back again. It is also not picking up all of the dirt anymore. The brush is spinning but one side of the brush bar is really hot. It is 6 years old and I have only changed the belt. Any suggestions what is wrong? Thanks, Wendy Ottumwa, IA

Answer:

Most likely you have debris built up around the brush ends that has worked its way into the bearings and causing friction. The increased stress on the motor may be damaging it and causing the intermittent power. It's best to replace the brush. Take a look at our Replacement Rugmaster Brush. You can view all other Electric Brush Options on our website.

Short in Hose? Suction Always On

My Hayden Central vacuum is turning on automatically when plugged into the outlet--just the suction. It used to be that the green light would go on when it was plugged in and I had to push the button to turn it on---forward for power head and back for just suction. The power head still works when I push the button forward as before. However the green light does not come on and it won't turn off when I put the button in the middle( or off) position. I have to just pull the hose out of the outlet in order to have it turn off. What to do? How do I tell if some wire is shorting? Thanks. Danielle in Salisbury, MD

Answer:

If your suction stays on when the vacuum hose switch is off, it usually indicates a low voltage signal issue. In this instance, it is difficult to troubleshoot for a quick resolution. We recommend continuing to unplug the hose from the inlet valve to turn it off, until something fully goes wrong or it stops working completely.

Stealth Brush

I have a stealth power brush. I tested the power head and nothing. I hooked up the hose to the supervalve like normal, tested for power right after the switch on the handle and there was power, I opened the stealth unit and tested the blue and red wires that came from the handle and they had power. I tested the two yellow wires that go to the motor and there was no power. How do I test to see if its the motor or circuit board? Also I could not tell if the wire bushings were burnt up or not. The copper windings look fine.

Answer:

There is a microswitch the neck triggers when in the upright position. It may be jammed. The switch can be accessed next to the motor near the neck of the brush. You will see a blue block, that is the microswitch. When you put the neck, slowly, into the upright position you should here a faint click before the neck snaps into the upright position. If you don't then it is jammed and can easily be cleaned out and resolved. It may also be the circuit board. If you are getting power to the circuit board but not out of the circuit board, this indicates a faulty board. If you are getting power through the circuit board, it indicates a bad motor.

Stealth Brush Stalls on Super Thick Carpet

We just moved into our new home which has your built-in vacuum system installed. We have the Stealth powered brush which we have not been able to use because it shuts down when we try to vacuum our carpets with it. Can you help us?

Answer:

More than likely the pile of carpet is too high for the brush to properly handle. First ensure the the carpet is allowed under warranty to be cleaned with a beater bar. Second, if it seems the carpet is just a bit too long, there are a few adjustments you can make to the Stealth Power Brush to help remedy this issue. Please let us know if it is high pile carpet or not by contacting one of our friendly customer service representatives.

Stealth Red Light On Brush Stopped

My stealth power brush turns on and spins for a second and then shuts off. The red light never goes off. Any suggestions? There seems to be power and suction. It just won't stay going.

Answer:

The long end of the vacuum roller has hair and dirt packed into the bearing housing. Simply remove the 4 large screws, lift off the plate, lift up the roller brush (only the far end opposite the belt), remove the bearing housing, clean and replace brush back inside unit.

Stealth Stalls On New Plush Carpet

I have new carpeting that is the same height as the carpet it replaced but is a lot thicker with slightly thicker pad. My stealth power head (PB14e) while working great on the previous carpet stalls out in this new carpet pushing in the forward direction even with the adjustment at its highest. In your past comments you have said that adjustments can be made. What are they? I still have the old carpeting in some rooms and the stealth stills works great in those rooms.

Answer:

Please open the bleeder valve located on the hose handle metal stub tube. This will reduce the tension of the power head by allowing some suction to “escape” through the bleeder valve opening improving maneuverability. We also have a way to make the Stealth adjust higher. If the adjustment knob does NOT rotate 360 degrees, then remove the cover and cut the tab on the rotating plate. Now the Stealth should sit up higher on the carpet.

Sticky Hose Insertion

What type of lubricant can I use to make it easier to push the hose end in/out of the wall outlet? Mine are very sticky because the previous owner didn't use the system.

Answer:

We don't recommend any lubricants in vacuum wall inlets. New Inlets or a New Hose End may be the best idea. Sometimes removing some plastic off the hose end works well.

Swivel Hose Available, Non-Electric?

Is there a swivel device available for the non-power hose? Ours tangles so much it is annoying. Hans

Answer:

There is no swivel on basic hoses. However, our Low Voltage Hose has a swivel and is non-electric. They don't have electricity but do have an on/off switch that takes the low voltage connection from the inlet to the hose handle. They are compatible with your system and you can view them on our website under our Low Voltage Hose Options. Upgrading to a low voltage hose is not expensive and is one of our all time customer favorites.

Troubleshooting Electric Hose AB 27

Geoffrey from Ashland, Oregon----I have a Silent Master model S2 vacuum system. The unit works fine with the my second hose (no wand) in the wall connections. The hose with the wand (use with beater) however the switch on the handle will not activate in either position. I opened the wand and sprayed electronic cleaner on the contact points and reassembled to no effect. There is a model number on the hose --AB 27. What should I do? Take hose to vacuum store or buy a new hose?

Answer:

Please take a look at our Troubleshooting Videos for this hose. If you are not able to fully test it then call a Local Dealer to see if they have experience. If not, you can work with us for repairs. Buying a new Electric Hose is another option and a good one if the hose is over 8 years old.

Turbo Brush Not Spinning

I have a Turbo 460 head and the brushes won't turn, do they only turn when on a carpet? Irla, Jupiter FL

Answer:

It should spin at all times when connected to suction. It may need service or replacement. Turbo brushes can become jammed at the turbine. If you are unable to manually rotate the brush at all, it will indicate a jammed brush. You will need to take it apart and remove the jam to return it to normal functionality.

TurboCat Slowly Spins

We have a vacuflo turbocat. It has very little suction and the beater brush spins very slowly. Any suggestions? Bonnie, Draper, Utah

Answer:

If you have a Vacuflo collection unit, reach up into the unit (bottom removed) and clean off the screen under the motor. One thing to do is put the Turbocat directly into the vacuum unit and see if it works. If it is not spinning fast, the Turbocat is clogged up, old, or needing repairs.

Turn Hose in Inlet for Suction

David, from Townsend, Ma. We have a centraLux vac. The unit will not run anymore when the hose is plugged in the normal way to the wall outlet. However when I turn the hose so the copper contact shorts to both contact points on the wall plate the unit turns on. The switch on the handle will then not shut off the unit.

Answer:

If you have to turn the hose in the inlet port for the suction to come on then most likely the on/off switch on your hose handle is bad and needs to be replaced.

Turns On and Quickly Off

i insert the hose into the outlet it works a few seconds but turns off and than on again. what is wrong? Genevive Kingston ny

Answer:

That sounds like a motor is going bad. Eventually, it will stop turning on. If you slap the vacuum unit it may run longer. Use our Brand links and Motor Page to find the replacement and instructions. It is rarely an issue with the circuit board or relay. They will typically surge when going bad.

Unit Not Turning On

We have a beam model#2250D. When plugging the hose into the wall socket the machine does not turn on, have to manually turn on the switch on the canister/vacuum. Thought it was the bag and so we replaced the bag however the machine will not reset. Any suggestions? Troubleshooting Chart?

Answer:

This could be one of several different issues from the hose to the unit. Follow our Troubleshooting Guide to help narrow down the problem.

Vacuflo Electric Power Head Not Working

I have an eight year old vacuflow 466 with an HP-500 motorized carpet brush. When we try to use the motorized head the vac unit comes on and the suction is fine but the power head is not energized. We brought the power head to a local vac shop and they tested it with a power cord and it worked fine. we have two hoses, one very new and it does not work wiht either hose. We have four outlets in the house and it does not work in any outlets. Dennis Rock Hill, NY

Answer:

It could be that the hose's 110 volt system has shorted out. Have someone run continuity tests on the hose to check it out. These hoses have a hidden diode fuse in the pigtail cord or two pin plug on the wall end of hose that can become faulty and can be replaced.

Very Noisy Power Brush

Have had this Central Vac 5 years and it has worked great. Beam Serinity Plus Power Head makes noise when vacuuming carpet. I looked and the brush is spinning and it is not clogged and the suction is good. It still picks up OK but is very noisy. Thanks

Answer:

It could be several things. The belt missing a tooth is most common, then followed by the motor or bearings going bad. After five years it may be time to upgrade and replace.

Wand Collapses

Every time I vacuum, the metal pipe collapses in on itself and goes to the shortest setting. Could there be a screw loose or something else that is an easy fix? Thanks, Kim Portland, OR

Answer:

Unfortunately, we do not carry any type of repair kit for the collapsing of your wand. Our only option would be to recommend a replacement wand, which you can view our options on our Extension Wand page on our website.

Wands Disconnecting

The metal wands on my Sequoia vac keep coming apart when I am vacuuming..they are not the button type

Answer:

Try cleaning both sides of the wand connection and reattaching. Dust can act like bearings and prevent a solid connection. You can also consider changing your sectional wands to a One-piece Telescopic Wand.
